A woman who survived against all odds, after being stabbed 32 times by her ex-boyfriend, has become engaged to the first responder who saved her life.
The touching moment occurred as Melissa Dohme prepared to throw the first pitch in a Tampa Bay Rays game against the New York Yankees at Tropicana Field in Florida on Monday night.
Cameron Hill, 40, ran out to present his girlfriend with a baseball on which he had written in red “Will you marry me?”.
The 23-year-old Melissa looked surprised when her boyfriend walked up to the mound to meet her and then he dropped to one knee and gave her the baseball. Melissa said yes and the crowd went wild.
The story began in January 2012, when Cameron responded to a 911 call after Melissa’s former boyfriend Robert Lee Burton Jr. had stabbed her 32 times in the face and neck.

Burton Jr. has since been sentenced to life in prison without parole, after pleading guilty to attempted murder in October 2013.
Melissa’s story is an incredible tale of survival, after she beat the odds to survive and then fell in love with the EMT who came to rescue her following the assault.
Cameron said that the sight of the young woman covered in blood with stab wounds to her hands, arms, face and head was the most terrifying one he had seen in his 17-year career.
1. Melissa, 23, looked surprised when Cameron walked up to the mound to greet her and then he dropped to one knee and showed her the baseball.
Melissa ended up spending the next three weeks in hospital. During that time, she flat-lined four times, received 12 units of blood and suffered a stroke which affected her balance.
Then a severed nerve partially paralyzed the left side of the young woman’s face.
Doctors did not know whether she would be able to speak, smile or walk again, but she made a miraculous recovery and left rehab without even a cane.
Melissa then decided to reach out to the paramedics who helped save her life and to tell her story to others.
2. Melissa Dohme and Cameron Hill found love after he was one of the first responders on the scene following her being stabbed 32 times by her ex-boyfriend.
Following a trip to Europe with friends, Melissa returned determined to become a nurse.
For some time, the survivor spoke to everyone except the firefighter-paramedics from Clearwater Station 47.
Then in October 2012, when she was speaking at a church in Clearwater, two of Melissa’s EMTs surprised her and one of them was Cameron. After many hugs and lots of tears, Melissa said:
I was weirdly giddy. I had this feeling about him.

When the two met again and talked easily and naturally, Melissa said she felt a full-blown crush.
For his part, Cameron had no idea what to do, but was unable to get Melissa out of his head.
Eventually, he asked her out and ever since then the two have been inseparable.
She calls him her “fairy tale”.
5. Melissa calls Cameron her “fairy tale” and on Monday evening their dreams came true when he proposed to her at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.
